The Abstract Creative: Behind the Art of Painter Africa Harris

In today’s Dirty South Club spotlight, we give a little shine and our #WCW honors to freelance abstract and collage painter Africa Harris. She talks wanting people to enjoy her work as much as she does, finding inspiration in people and good energy and loving the culture of the South!

What’s your name and where are you from:

My name is Africa Harris and I am from Leesville, Louisiana.

What do you do and what inspired you to do it:

I am a freelance abstract and collage painter. I’ve always been creative and have always loved art and music. I knew I wanted to continue my education after high school, so I decided to invest in something I am passionate about…art. So I went to art school.

Best business or personal advice you’ve ever received:

Trust yourself, stay true to yourself, do the work, stay consistent!

What do you like to do for fun:

For fun, I love music festivals. I love museum hopping. I love dining out and spending time with friends.

Any words of advice or encouragement for those who wish to follow in your footsteps:

DREAM BIG. WORK HARD.

What’s a dream or goal you are currently pursuing or wish to pursue:

Right now, I’m working on building my brand for myself, by myself. It’s difficult to do that when so many people are telling me what I “need” and “should” do. My art is really personal and really important to me. I want it to represent just that. Clean, simple, fun, easy — no pressure. I want people to enjoy the work as much as I do. I am also saving to travel. I want to see the world. I’m inspired by people and culture and good energy!

What do you love most about the Dirty South:

I love the culture of the South. I love the feeling of family and tradition. I love the sense of community there. I love the warm, humid summer nights…the sound of crickets and mosquitoes. It’s a very comforting place.
